Some people say the coaches don’t matter,  it’s the players on the field that make the difference. I disagree.  Derek Lee also disagrees. Coach Perry Hill took a player that had played some second base, but was primarily an outfielder named Delwyn Young and made him a second baseman.  Hill did this in the middle of the baseball season.  Did Young possess skills?  Certainly.  But the ability of Hill, in a very short period of time, to turn Young into an average second baseman was nothing short of remarkable.  Hill saved the Pirates organization a considerable amount of money.  It can [...]

Perry Hill will not be returning to the Pirates in 2010.  Also announced today was that AAA pitching coach Ray Searage has been promoted to ML coaching staff. “We made an aggressive attempt to bring Perry back, excercising his option and offering to restructure and extend his contract,” said Neal Huntington, ”despite these efforts, Perry has decided that he does not want to coach.” The Pirates also announced Saturday that Ray Searage will join the big league staff to work under pitching coach Joe Kerrigan. The ESPN 30 on 30 documentary, ‘The Band That Wouldn’ Die’ by Oscar-winning Barry Levinson (Best Director ’88 Rain Man) was compelling work.  It chronicles the story of the Baltimore fan base losing their beloved Colts. The story focuses on the Colts band and how their loyalty dedication, and love for their city paid off. “None of the band members were paid, but they kept a membership of 150 strong during the 12 years the city didn’t have an NFL team,” Levinson said. Rum Bunter is all about fighting and baseball today.  We have fan fights from MLB playoffs, the man without a team– Jason Bay, and the one man machine Brock Lesnar.  The MLB playoffs are in full swing so it’s time for Rum Bunter to take a swab of the videos that show drunken baseball fans cheering, throwing haymakers, spiking chicks with beer and whatever else fans do watching baseball in October.  Must be freakin nice.
