Pittsburgh Pirates: A Decade of Decadence.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are the worst team of the decade. Baseball, Football, Soccer, hell you name the sport. Unless you’re from Kansas City don’t even try to argue. The Royals may have lost 100 games in four of five seasons, but at least the Royals found a way to finish above 0.500 once during the decade. The Pirates can only celebrate May 29, 2004. Because it was the latest date in any season, in the entire decade, the Pirates were over .500. You think your team is bad? Read along with us as we look back at the past decade of [...]
People of PNC Park
Got a chance to listen to Pirates GM Neal Huntington talk with Rocco DeMaro on 104.7 tonight. After the eight plus minutes of commercials with angry white men screaming political ads, NH talked about Matt Capps. The angry white men were awful, but more interesting. Really, nothing you haven’t heard already. But that is coming from an angry white Pirate fan who is a man, so perhaps I am biased. Maybe the nauseum that NH said the money saved will go into baseball operations. Hmmm. Yeh. He talked Capps for 25 minutes. Ugh. (It would be best for Capps to close [...]
Pirates Caravan Downsized. Who Wants to See Fans Anyway?
The Pirates do some shocking things, but today I am stunned yet again. Who would think so much analyzing by the Pirates management would cut the one thing that the Pirates have done so well over the years? I have listed both the 2009 format and the upcoming 2010 format for you below. A quick count looks like 14 communities have been cut from the schedule. Erie is out for the Pirates, but Erie is in for the Cleveland Indians (Go Erie article). It makes absolutely no sense why the Pirates would let the Indians invade the Erie market. I shake my head [...]
Pittsburgh Pirate Neil Walker is a fan favorite at RumBunter. We have one favor of our readers, please keep doubting Neil Walker. When he has his breakout year, we don’t need any of you on the bandwagon. Walker recently completed his contract with Los Bravos de Margarita in Venezuela. Rum Bunter Deportes was able to run into him at the fruit market on his way out of the country. Fortunately, he had a few minutes to answer a few quick questions for us.
Pirate Fans Don’t Read This
At Rum Bunter, we aim to look for happy, funny stories to ease the pain and suffering on our readership. Sure the Pirates suck right now, but the future always looks bright in Pittsburgh. As we have become used to saying as Pirate fans, just let out a big sigh and repeat after me, “there is always next season.” But do you really believe it? Most Pirate fans agree, 2010 doesn’t look real special. Maybe we should change our anthem? Repeat after me, SIGH…” there is always the season after next!” Surely you remember when the Pirates were looking for a GM. It [...]
Bye Bye Bull Rider; Serious Gigabytes Saved on Jumbotron
No more barbed wire at PNC Park? The Pittsburgh Pirates shocked fans at a few minutes after midnight when they non-tendered Matt Capps . It’s our opinion that GM Neal Huntington tried to bluff at the poker table called the winter meetings. He told everyone he was going to offer a contract to Capps. He probably tried to deal him. Nobody believed he was going to tender Capps, or more likely, the GM’s just waited until midnight to see exactly what they had to work with from the non-tender list. A deal couldn’t get done. And this move is certainly risky [...]
Pirates Front Office Up Two Zip on Marlins
Today’s episode of Rum Bunter Deep Thoughts speaks to the Pirates relations with the Florida Marlins. The Marlins are a team that is looking to keep payroll at a modest level. Ownership has been questioned by Florida fans. Sound familar? That’s about where the similarities end. Back in November, we saw that Rob at The Trib had added that former Pirate coach Perry Hill was denied permission to speak with the Florida Marlins. The Pirates have that right after exercising Hill’s 2010 option. It was discussed in this article from Palm Beach Post. The Marlins are rehauling their coaching staff and Hill [...]
Pirates Don’t Get Putz; NL Central Buzz
AP JJ Putz was mentioned as a possible pitcher the Pirates would pursue. It didn’t happen. $3 million dollars and perhaps because of the efforts and comments like ”if you’re a free agent you want to go to a winner,” from his bromance recruiter, Sox reliever Matt Thornton, Putz will be getting the call from Ozzie in 2010 for the Chicago White Sox. The move gives the White Sox serious bullpen options. A one, two punch as setup men or Thornton and Putz can fight it out for the closer role if the Sox try to move Bobby Jenks. The move would have made sense for [...]
