The Pittsburgh Pirates gave Garrett Atkins his unconditional release today. The Bucs also reassigned Fernando Nieve and Justin Thomas to the minors.
Atkins failures at the plate were evident from the exhibition game against the Manatees. It’s just not there anymore. The struggles to hit after being such a stud under Clint Hurdle in the past was a disappointment. A few Pirates fans had dreams of seeing an Atkins return to glory, especially with the club need some stroke from the right side of the plate but it just wasn’t in the cards.
Thomas threw only 4.1 IP and had a 2.08 ERA. Nieve compiled 7.1 mostly rough innings this spring his ERA was 5.82. The roster is below and stands at 41 players.
