Pirates Bullpen Light On Lefties

Pirates left hander Scott Olsen has a sketchy future ahead which might include beginning the season on the DL.

Scott Olsen

could be out for the Pittsburgh Pirates immediate plans.  After some interesting comments, two rough outings, and an injury that spawned even more interesting comments, it looks like a done deal that Olsen will be working on a comeback  from the disabled list.  It’s just another frustrating setback for Olsen.  This time it’s proving awfully hard for him to win a roster spot when he hasn’t really given himself an opportunity to do so.

Joe Beimel was thought to be the veteran the Bucs bullpen would use extensively in 2011.  It isn’t working out that way as Beimel is also suffering from an injury.

So the options are down to Brian Burres and newly acquired Garrett Olson who pitched yesterday against the Twins and got two groundballs in a quick inning.

The Pirates hard throwing lefty Will Ledezma was cut loose in the offseason and he was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays.   Maybe that was actually a good thing because this Spring he has thrown in five games and has an ERA of 9.64 after he allowed six hits in 4.2 innings. He has walked three and struck out two with a 1.93 WHIP and a .333 average against.

What was a strength for the Bucs last season is quickly turning into a M.A.S.H. nightmare. It seems there won’t be any lights out lefties on the Bucs squad, but remember, there’s still a lot time.  And on occassion this left handers fall from the sky.  Maybe just maybe, it’s Olson?
