Exicardo Cayones, Wait What?

The Pirates have finally completed the A.J. Burnett trade. They will be paying $13 million of the $33 million Burnett is owed over the next two years. That’s divided up unequally so the Pirates will pay $5 million this year and $8 million next year. That leaves open the possibility of the Pirates trading him before that two year deal is up and getting something for him or just saving some money.

The prospects that the Pirates are sending the Yankees are Diego Moreno and Exicardo Cayones.

Moreno is a decently well known prospect who throws very hard. However, he is already 25 years old and pitched in AA last year, which isn’t where you’d like a pitcher of his age. Moreno is a long shot to make a splash in the big leagues, so the Pirates probably won’t miss him.

The other prospect is Cayones. I’m not going to lie, before today I had never even heard of this guy. I love to pretend that I know everything about the Pirates, but that’s just not true. There aren’t many prospects that I haven’t heard of (and there probably shouldn’t be any at all), but Cayones is one of those guys I just didn’t know about.

Last year Cayones hit .228/.333/.325 in rookie and A- ball. But who cares about the stats, he’s gone now.

Chances are you’ll never heard Exicardo Cayones’s name again. But what I want to know is this: had you heard his name before today? Be honest, it’s an anonymous poll.
