Pirates Jeff Karstens Exits After One Inning with Right Shoulder Inflammation

Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jeff Karstens got two quick outs against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The right hander then allowed two runs on three hits.

He batted in the bottom of the second inning taking the first two pitches and then struck out swinging on a low pitch from Ian Kennedy. But didn’t return to the mound and Jared Hughes, who was warming up before Karstens hit, took over.

It was announced after the Bucs tied the game in the bottom of the third inning that Karstens has inflammation in his right shoulder and will be examined by the Pirates medical staff when he returns to Pittsburgh.
