Pirates Select Blinn College 3B Eric Wood in Sixth Round

In the sixth round with the 196th pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected 19-year old 3B Eric Wood.

It’s an interesting pick as Wood is a Junior College Player at Blinn College. Wood wasn’t listed in the Top 500 picks from Baseball America, but has some pop in his bat.

Wood hit for a .318/.425/.486 line in 173 at-bats with four bombs.

Wood wasn’t named to the conference team.  He was in the Buccaneers rotation at the start of the season as one of the top five starters on Coach McIntyre’s staff.  He didn’t pitch much from what we can gather, it looks like just four innings.

It’s definently an interesting, signability type pick.  Someone loved this kid.  It certainly seems like a situation where the Pirates wanted to get him, took him early, and trust it helps the Appel kitty.
