Pirates Making Dreams Come True: Sign ‘Beast’ Hayden Hurst

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed right handed pitcher Hayden Hurst from the Bolles School. The kid is huge at 6’5″ and 225 pounds. Hurst was Baseball America’s #406 prospect. His fastball sits in the 88 to 92 mph range, and has touched 95.

One would think that Hurst will get a bonus in the $100,000 area, based on the limits placed on draft picks selected after the 10th round.  One thing to consider: if he gets more than $100K, that cash would come out of the money slotted for first round pick Mark Appel.

Sometimes it’s amazing to hear about the success these players have had, but read what Hurst went through when he was in EIGHTH grade…

He was the winning pitcher in the State Championship game for his high school as a freshman. In the summer of 2009, he was a member of the World Champion 16U TeamUSA. He turns 19 in August, and had a commitment to pitch for Florida State, but was thought to be going to Junior College until the Bucs signed him.
