Tony Sanchez Gets The Call To Join Pittsburgh Pirates

Tony Sanchez is joining the Pittsburgh Pirates in New York and could be activated if catcher Russell Martin needs to head to the disabled list.  Early this morning, Kristy Robinson tweeted the news about Sanchez getting the call and Cocktails confirmed it.

Sanchez was taken in the first round with the Buccos fourth overall pick in 09.  The Pirates Russell Martin has been out with a sore neck and could likely be headed to the disabled list.    Sanchez was hitting .269 with eight doubles and two bombs at Triple-A Indianapolis.

The Pirates were given a hard time for taking Sanchez so early in 2009.  Some viewed it as a cheap move, but the Bucs were proven right when the man referred to as @Tony26Montana on twitter came out and hit .316 with seven bombs for the West Virginia Power.  The good offensive numbers continued until numerous injuries seemed to derail the fast track for the right-handed hitting catcher from Boston College.

From everything we have seen, Sanchez has some tremendous defensive skills behind the dish and will be a welcome addition to the Buccos.  Let’s trust he doesn’t make his debut against Matt Harvey of the Mets – that would be downright criminal.
