Pirates Acquire Russ Canzler In Trade From Orioles

The Pirates acquired 1B/OF Russ Canzler from the Orioles this afternoon, in exchange for RHP Tim Alderson. Canzler is twenty-seven years old, and has limited big league experience, playing twenty-nine games between 2011-2012. The Pirates added him to the forty man roster, and optioned him to Indianapolis immediately. Canzler is a career .278 hitter in the minor leagues, but lacks power in his bat.

“Lacks power”??? He’s averaged 20 HRs the last 3 years in the minors & has 11 this season. Personally, I like this move. I was hoping they’d get Canzler when he was DFA’d in the off-season. This may be Inge’s eventual replacement, as he can play 1B-3B & RF. Has to be better than Jerry Sands – what a waste! Don’t expect to see Sands in a Pirate uniform ever.

(Alderson, as you recall, was the “can’t miss” guy we traded Freddy Sanchez for straight-up)

3 home runs in 29 career major league games. He’s a AAAA guy. He might mash in the minors, but he’s never shown big time pop in the show, unfortunately. This seems like a depth move to me, but I’d love to be wrong.

    • Tj Streib

It is a depth move & one they needed to make. I don’t think 29 games is enough of a barometer to write Canzler off (that does translate to 15-16 HRs over a full season, which sounds right). I do like the .270 BA in limited ML action & it’s a whole heckuva lot better than anyone on our bench has to offer… or half the starting lineup

    • Campbell Sproul

I’m not against giving the guy a shot, but I’m not really excited about the move either.

    • Rumble-Bumble Cat

Agreed. Thats a limited run to gauge a guy. If i recall, Walker, Mercer, and others all looked ineffective their first time up. It is rare, but there is also the late bloomer factor. Garret Jones being the recent example. This says a lot about right field though. Snider plays hard and he is still young, but so was Lastings Milledge. Ouch.

    • Tj Streib

At this point, if you’re going to give Tabata one last shot before the deadline, you should move Snider & give Lambo his shot as well (instead of Harrison…… again?) – better to give him a shot now before mortgaging Polanco, Taillon & the future for a rental

    • blustrk

      Ouch. What a bad trade!

  • blustrk

Wonder why we bothered? Why not just cut Inge and trade Snider and Sanchez for one right handed bat?

    • Tj Streib

Cut Inge (I’d prefer cutting Barmes) & deal Snider to Houston or Miami (or Seattle?) for lunch money. Call up Rambo-Lambo & Canzler

    • blustrk

We are on the same page.

  • Alan Davidson

me thinks a depth move for a lambo call up after the break

    • Rumble-Bumble Cat

Ooooh good call! That makes sense unless this guy is the next GI Jones. I think you nailed it though. Lambo over Snider, even in a platoon with Tabata is a huge upgrade.

    • blustrk

Correct. Snider, Inge, Barmes and even Sanchez are becoming empty bats. Lambo deserves a shot and Presley has always given some pop when he gets some at bats. I do have to admit that major league pitching has been fantastic this year and even Cutch has had a lot of bad at bats.
