The Yankees and Pirates will open their Grapefruit League 2014 Spring Training schedule in a few hours.  Baseball is finally back!  While the Pirates were scrimmaging against each other, the Yankees played against Florida State and Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston a few hours ago. The Evil Empire cruised and Winston did little against his favorite team.

We found it interesting that Winston had not lost a game since June. He was unbeaten in baseball, yeh he is the closer we know, and he took his football team to the NCAA Football National Champtionship.  That is still a unique stat.

In the game against the Yankee, Winston came into the game in the fifth inning as a defensive replacement in left field with the Yanks up 5-0.  According to the ESPN story, Winston broke his bat and then grounded out to second.

The Yankees lineup looked like this against FSU:

Brett Gardner, CF
Francisco Cervelli C
Kelly Johnson 3B
Russ Canzler 1B
Zoilo Almonte LF
Brendan Ryan SS
Adonis Garcia RF
Yangervis Solarte 2B
John Ryan Murphy DH

Vidal Nuno LHP

The Pirates will be sending Francisco Liriano to the mound at McKechnie tomorrow.   Frankie is scheduled to pitch one inning but don’t be alarmed.  Clint Hurdle said it was just the way things were set up.  Liriano went two innings doing his side work recently so he won’t need to pitch two against New York.

Let’s trust it’s three up and three down for anyone in the Bucs rotation this spring.  Setbacks are something the club can ill afford.
