Great Scot – Episode 2 – Pirates: Roster Predictions

I promise not all of my articles will have some sort of prediction to it, however, the best part of the beginning of the season is the unknown and making the best guesses based upon what we know now.  It’s also a little fun to look back at the end of the season and note just how wrong we are.

So in good fun, here is my predictions for the Opening Day Roster + Lineup and the Playoff Roster + Lineup.  Please note, this is with zero trades or injuries being figured into the equation.

There you go.  We’ll check back here in about six months or so to see how close I am.  If there were any upgrade to make in these lineups, it would be at 1st base if Lambo and Sanchez is ineffective.  In theory, RF will be taken over by Polanco and I kept Wandy in the starting rotation and replacing Locke, however it wouldn’t shock me to see that reversed to make room for Taillon.

  • Al Cotton

A couple of problems I see with your roster. One……….you have only 1 catcher. While Martin is the best the Bucs got, I find it hard to believe he will play all 162 games. Two…..There is no way the Bucs will leave the $5 million dollar man Edison Volquez off the roster. He is the replacement for AJ Burnett. They went out and wasted……..er I mean spent $5 million on this guy. There is no way he isn’t on the opening day roster. NH has taken a lot of heat (justified in my opinion) for the whole AJ sham, lie, whatever you wanna call it. So he has to hope Volquez pans out to take some of the heat off of him.

    • Tony Canella

Fun fact: AJ Burnett’s two year ERA before he joined the Pirates was higher then Edison Volquez’s last two years. 5.20 compared to 4.90 *roughly*. But I agree with you. Volquez will most likely get the nod as the number 5. He won’t do anything special, but I bet will be a serviceable 5 until Locke takes over in the 2nd half.

    • Eric Scot

Hahaha, you are correct and that means, Chris Stewart and Clint Barmes will replace Harrison and Morel.

  • Enrico Pallazo

Barmes makes the team as a bench player. No way they put together a roster without a backup up SS. Or cut Barmes in spring training after they just gave him a $2 mil contract for 2014.

  • Tj Streib

Stewart, Barmass, Volquez, Decker & Mazzaro have to be in here somewhere… and possibly McGuiness. So I predict Morris goes (I HOPE Morris goes!), Dickerson & Morel don’t make the team, McGuiness POSSIBLY beats out Lambo (though I root for Lambo). Snider gets cut/traded in favor of Decker. Mazzaro sticks as one of the pitchers begin the year on the DL (hey! it happens)

    • Tj Streib

… and now Locke gets hurt, making my “pitcher on the DL” prediction that much more likely
