Reg E. Cathey is a Pirates fan. We didn’t know that. Of course there are a number of great baseball comemercials on tv this time of year, but one is especially notable for Pirates fans. To coincide with Opening Day, MLB Network worked with veteran film and TV actor Reg E. Cathey, also known as Freddy, the gravelly voiced proprietor of Freddy’s BBQ Joint on “House of Cards.”
The promo can be viewed right here in all of its’ glory. It of course features Andrew McCutchen, the National League MVP. What you didn’t know is that Cathey, a longtime Pittsburgh Pirates fan and star of the upcoming film “Hands of Stone,” is the magical voice in the promo which debuted yesterday during MLB Opening Day.
Reg has played some great roles in his career which included roles in one of my favorites from HBO– The Wire. He was also in the HBO prison drama Oz–the word drama is used lightly.
The spot, which also features Public Enemy’s “Harder Than You Think” as the soundtrack, will be featured on MLB Network throughout the month.
Pirates fans seem to be growing by the minute. How in the world Cathey became a fan of the Bucs is a story I don’t have the answer to, but anyway, maybe you learned something today? I did.
