The Chicago Cubs desperately want to be contenders in the 2015 season, but trying and actually coming through with deals are two completely different things.

The Cubs reportedly made an offer to free agent starting pitcher Jon Lester. Lester would definitely change the entire rotation of the Cubbies. He is the true definition of an ace and would give fans a real-deal starter to root for.

Lester would join a rotation that likely will include Jake Arrieta, Kyle Hendricks, Travis Wood and Jacob Turner. The Cubs do not have a true No. 1 starter but the addition of Lester could solve problems immediately. Every other starter would move down and therefore place them in their proper spot. If the rotation looks like the projection, it would immediately become one of the best in the league.

The Cubs may have one of the better offenses in the National League next season and it could become even better if the pitching does not put pressure on the hitters.

The Cubs have been go-getters this offseason by trying to sign Russell Martin earlier this year and reportedly being in discussions with other free agents. Still, Theo Epstein has yet to work his magic with any big name. However, the situation could change completely if Lester signs with North Siders. The lineup will most likely be in the upper echelon of the National League in home runs and runs with big boppers like Anthony Rizzo, Jorge Soler and Kris Bryant all primed to smack the ball over the ivy. The Cubs offense has so much potential that getting a good rotation together could make them a force in the not too distant future.

Of course, they are still the Cubs and somehow someway they will figure out a way to lose no matter how great the team looks on paper.
