The Pittsburgh Pirates have extended a contract offer to Angel Pagan

According to Jon Heyman of Fanrags Sports, outfielder Angel Pagan has received contract offers from ‘many teams.’ One of these teams is the Pittsburgh Pirates

According to Heyman, none of the offers Pagan has received yet are acceptable. Obviously this is the case, or else he would not be a free agent right now. Due to this, Pagan is currently playing for Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic with nowhere to go afterward.

Angel Pagan has spent the past five seasons with the San Francisco Giants. While in San Francisco he was the member of two World Series Championship teams in 2012 and 2014.

Last season, Pagan posted a 105 wRC+ and a 2.1 WAR in 129 games for the Giants. This came on the heels of Pagan’s worst season by the bay. In 2015 he had a wRC+ of just 79 and a -0.7 WAR in 133 games.

Signing Angel Pagan would not make much sense for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Currently, the Pirates do not have a true fourth outfielder. But they do not need one.

The Pirate bench will feature Adam Frazier who can play the corner outfield positions. Second baseman Josh Harrison could also play left or right field, with Frazer or Phil Gosselin taking his place at second base.

The Pirates already have more bench players than bench spots available. Signing Angel Pagan would just add to this logjam. And Pagan plays a position where the Pirates already have plenty of depth.

In addition to Frazier and Harrison being able to play the outfield, the Pirates’ top prospect is outfielder Austin Meadows who will begin the season at Triple-A. Furthermore, outfielder Jose Osuna will begin the season at Triple-A but is knocking on the doors of the Major Leagues. The Bucs have plenty of outfield depth.

Odds are Angel Pagan wants a starting job in the Major Leagues, as well as a multi-year contract. He will not find a starting job in Pittsburgh and he, most likely, would not find a multi-year contract either.

Angel Pagan is an interesting name to see the Pirates tied to. However, he is not a player the Pirates need. Due to this, the Pirates should not sign Pagan.
