The Pittsburgh Pirates remain red hot in Grapefruit League play

On Sunday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Minnesota Twins by a score of 4-3. With the victory, the Pirates are now 12-4 in Grapefruit League play.

Trevor Williams made the start for the Pirates. Williams allowed two runs on three hits, no walks, and three strikeouts in three innings pitched. He also allowed a home run.

Steven Brault then took over in the fourth inning. Brault continues to do all that he can to win the final spot in the Pirate rotation.

On Sunday, Steven Brault pitched three scoreless innings. In these three innings pitched he allowed just two hits and he walked one batter. However, he also failed to record a strikeout. In nine innings pitched this spring Brault has allowed just one run (a solo home run) on eight hits, he has walked two batters, and he has struck out four.

Felipe Rivero followed Steven Brault. In his one inning of work Rivero did what he does and blew opposing hitters away. He recorded a strikeout while retiring all three batters he faced.

Casey Sadler pitched the eighth inning allowing a base hit and recording a strikeout. Tyler Webb then came in to pitch the ninth inning. Webb allowed a solo home run while striking out a pair of hitters.

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ offense was sparked by catcher Chris Stewart. Stewart finished the game 2-for-2 with a double and 3 RBIs. Shortstop Jordy Mercer also recorded a double and a RBI in three trips to the plate.

John Jaso started at first base and went 1-for-2, he was also hit by a pitch. David Freese was 0-for-2 with a walk, Jose Osuna went 0-for-3, and Adam Frazier was 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter. Shortstop prospect Kevin Newman continued his impressive spring collecting a base hit in his lone at bat, and he stole a base.

Next up for the Pirates is a trip to Lake Buena Vista to play the Atlanta Braves on Monday afternoon. Tyler Glasnow is scheduled to start for the Pirates. Wade LeBlanc, A.J. Schugel, Dan Runzler, Pat Light, and Dovydas Neverauskas are all scheduled to pitch as well.
