The Pittsburgh Pirates lost game 2 of their 3 game weekend series at Citi Field on Friday night

Friday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates suffered a frustrating loss. This was a game where the Pirates had plenty of opportunities to score runs but never got the big hit. Finishing the night 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position led to a 4-2 Pirate loss.

With the loss, the Pirates are now 25-31 on the season. They are now just 2-3 against the New York Mets this season.

The New York Mets would strike first on Saturday night. Tyler Glasnow walked Michael Conforto to start the bottom of the 1st inning, and then with 2-outs Neil Walker hit a home run to make it 2-0 Mets.

In the top of the 2nd inning, Josh Bell hit his team leading 11th home run for the Pittsburgh Pirates. This cut the New York lead to 2-1. His 11 home runs also lead all National League rookies.

2-1 would remain the score until the top of the 3rd inning. After Adam Frazier and Josh Harrison hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, Gregory Polanco recorded a RBI groundout to tie the game at 2.

Polanco’s ground out also moved Harrison to second base with just 1 out. However, the Pirates failed to get him home.

Stranding Harrison would quickly come back to bite the Pirates. Jay Bruce hit a solo home run with just 1 out in the bottom of the 3rd inning, and this gave the Mets a 3-2 lead.

Then in the top fo the 4th inning, the Pirates’ struggles with runners in scoring position would continue. Jordy Mercer doubled with 1-out, and this was followed by Elias Diaz reaching on an infield hit. Although, that infield hit easily could have been an error on Mets’ third base Wilmer Flores.

This gave the Pirates runners on the corners with just 1-out. However, Met starting pitcher Robert Gsellman would get out of it. First, he struck out Tyler Glasnow looking (#FreeTheDH). Then, he got Adam Frazier to bounce back to the mound to end the inning.

The Pittsburgh Pirates threatened once again in the top fo the 6th inning. With 1-out, Andrew McCutchen walked, Jordy Mercer singled, and the Pirates had men on the corners with just 1 out. This chased Mets’ starter Robert Gsellman from the game, who threw a career-high 109 pitches, as Terry Collins called on right-handed reliever Fernando Salas.

Fernando Salas would put the fire out for the Mets. He struck out Elias Diaz for the second out of the inning. Then, pinch-hitter Jose Osuna flew out to right field to end the inning. At this point, the Pirates were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position on Saturday night.

Osuna pinch-hitting closed the book on starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow. In 5 innings of work Glasnow allowed 4 runs, all earned, on 5 hits, 3 home runs, 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts.

Johnny Barbato took over for the Pirates in the bottom of the 6th inning. Barbato would flirt with disaster, but he managed to get out of it.

The inning started with Barbato allowing back-to-back singles to Neil Walker and Lucas Duda. After striking out Wilmer Flores, he got Curtis Granderson to pop out to Josh Bell. Barbato then struck out Rene Rivera to end the inning, keeping the score at 4-2 Mets.

The Pirates threatened once again in the 7th. With 2-outs, Gregory Polanco reached on an error and David Freese singled. However, Josh Bell would strikeout to end the inning.

With 1-out in the top of the 8th inning Jordy Mercer hit his second double of the game. Elias Diaz then walked to put 2 men on with 1-out for pinch-hitter John Jaso.

Addison Reed was able to get Jaso to pop out to shortstop, and then Adam Frazier grounded out ending the threat. This ended the inning, and made the Pirates 1-for11 with runners in scoring position.

In the top of the 9th, the Pirates threatened yet again. Josh Harrison singled to start the inning, but Reed retired the next 3 batters he faced to end the game.

The Pirates finished the night just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
