Pirates Curse Continues: Josh Bell Out After Meniscus Surgery

We were pestering people with the Pittsburgh Pirates all week for news on Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Josh Bell.

In case you missed it, this past Tuesday Bell, playing for the West Virginia Power, injured his knee rounding first base after a single through the middle in the third inning. Most of us either know the feeling (damn it’s deflating) or know someone that has had it happen to them.

The Bucs were quiet all week as Bell underwent an MRI on Wednesday.

The Pirates sent Bell for meniscus surgery on his left knee yesterday by Dr. Patrick DeMeo in Pittsburgh.

The Bucs are cursed. I swear.

The team said Bell will return to Bradenton to begin his rehab. It’s an injury that with an intense commitment to rehab Bell will be able to overcome. I know. I get it. It just pisses me off.

Starling Marte and His Seven Game Hitting Streak Make Indianapolis Debut

The Pittsburgh Pirates have three outfielders that possess the ability to magnetize my eyes entirely on them when they are on the diamond. Fortunately for my eyeballs, they have never been in the same lineup. Yet.

But when Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte, and Josh Bell are all in the same outfield one day, it could give me a headache.

A really good headache. (An imagine trying to decide which jersey to buy type headache)

McCutchen is making it happen at the big league level. Bell is on an agressive path at West Virginina. Marte makes his home debut in front of the Indianapolis Indians fans tonight.

“The Pirates want him to get a little seasoning, but I wouldn’t expect he’ll be here very long,” said Indians manager Dean Treanor of the organization’s fourth-ranked prospect. “Still, I think the timing has to be right. I think they want him to face some more veteran pitching before they call him up, but I really don’t expect him to be here an extended period of time.”

Starling Marte has gotten off to a solid start in AAA Indianapolis

Marte hasn’t disappointed after his solid spring which had many clamoring for him to break with the big club. The toolsy center fielder has a seven game hitting streak. He has shown power with a double, triple and his leadoff homer came off a left handed pitcher He is perfect in his four steal attempts. He has struckout six times in his 31 at-bats without working a free pass.

Take a good look at that 23-year old center fielder tonight Indianapolis. You should bring a camera loaded with a big memory card and grab a bunch of pics, because pretty soon that’s all you will have. Marte is a couple months away from Pittsburgh.
