Overall this would be a really good start to the Pittsburgh Pirates 2021 Draft class. While many want the team to add pitching, it is important for the team to also get who they think will be the best player. In this case, high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer makes the most sense for them. He checks a lot of boxes they look for and his arrow is pointed up.
Taking Mayer in the first round will also allow them to get an elite hitter right away. Much like last year with Nick Gonzales, taking an elite bat early allows the team to take chances on pitchers later in the Draft. In this scenario that is exactly what happens. The team is able to use their large bonus pool to acquire a big time prep arm in Thatcher Hurd and follow it up with a projectable college arm in McGreevy.
While neither of those arms are viewed as can’t miss prospects, they do posses the traits that the Front Office looks for in pitching prospects. They are both very athletic with projectable frames and fastballs. Ben Cherington has said that finding pitching is as much, if not more, based on how they develop the arms they have. If this is really their theory then this mock draft could be representative of what they try and do in three weeks.
