Designate Heath Hembree for assignment, select the contract of Yerry De Los Santos

As we discussed on the site on Saturday, it’s time for the Pittsburgh Pirates to move on from veteran right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree. Hembree has been terrible for the Pirates this season and it is time for the team to move on.

One reliever the Pirates need ot get onto their active roster is righty Yerry De Los Santos. De Los Santos is not currently on the 40-man roster, which is why designating Hembree for assignment makes sense. Doing this would open up a spot on the 40-man and active roster for De Los Santos.

De Los Santos has a 2.13 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 12.2 innings pitched this season. De Los Santos looks like a pitcher with little left to prove in the minors, as well as a pitcher who appears ready to help a MLB bullpen.

Overall the Pirate bullpen has been strong this season. Firing Hembree into the sun and adding De Los Santos to the active roster would make the bullpen better. It’s time for the Pittsburgh Pirates to make the move.
