Caveman Matt Diaz Makes It So Easy For Pirates Fans

facebooktwitterreddit

A quick look at Matt Diaz who was acquired last week by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Good:

Diaz can hit lefties. The Bucs need help in that regard. Diaz is a right-handed hitter who has ripped southpaws so well his triple slash looks out of place on the roster of the Pittsburgh Pirates– a .335/.373/.533 for his career. Last year wasn’t the best for Diaz and he still slugged .512 against lefties.

The Questions:

He’s not going to deliver as a starter, but will the Pirates believe that? Have they promised Diaz some time?  Three times in his career Diaz has worked 300 plate appearances and each season The Caveman hit over .300 and had a .360+ on-base percentage and put up a slugging number better than .475.   If he can get that many plate appearances, that’s when Diaz is at his best. In 2006 he had 323PA and slugged .475.  In 2007 he had 384PA and slugged .497.  In 2009 he had 425 PA and slugged .488.  .

Some Lingering Doubt:

The caveman costumes will be all over PNC Park on opening day.  But Diaz will be a corner outfielder in the NL Central….so where is the power?
