Former Pirates Closer Octavio Dotel Reportedly Nearing A Deal

Reports last night were that Octavio Dotel

was nearing a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.   Enrique Rojas reported that

"In Toronto, Dotel could get a chance to be a closer, a factor that led him to more seriously consider the Blue Jays’ offer over others from Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay, the source said."

We find it interesting that the Pirates are engaged in such talks at this time.  We like the implication that Dotel wouldn’t be a closer in Pittsburgh, but what is the underlying message?  Would Dotel be another backup plan should Joel Hanrahan or Evan Meek falter, or is a larger deal in the works to move either Meek or Hanrahan?

There are many assumptions Pirates fans can draw from the Bucs being in discussions with Dotel.  It’s just hard to determine which one is the real deal.
