Don’t Buy The Weight Loss

*Insert some heinous photoshop of Pedro Alvarez and Richard Simmons here*

^That wasn’t a mistake, seriously Tom, do it.

There are videos and pictures posted on this website and others of Pedro Alvarez from PirateFest last night. I have heard a couple of people say how much thinner and in shape he looks and how that could help him turn his horrible 2011 performance around. Ummm?

I understand wanting to use anything possible to stay positive about the guy, and this is a good way to try to convince your better judgement that Alvarez will actually be the player we expected him to be this year. But come on, is losing ten pounds really going to help him that much?

I’m not a dietician or anything more than a computer-baseball-geek college kid that thinks he’s a lot cooler than he actually is, but I can’t imagine Pedro being any better of a baseball player because he’s a little bit thinner. I’m sure it couldn’t hurt, but that isn’t going to fix the many issues he had last year.

And as far as I can remember, it seemed like Pedro lost a lot of weight during the time last summer when he was on the DL with the injury. I clearly remember a discussion about that in one of live game blogs shortly after his return. That didn’t work out too well for him then, so why would it change now?

If I knew what the fix for Alvarez was, I would say it, but I don’t. It’s just tough for me to believe that losing weight is going to have anything to do with it.

Next time I’ll try to be positive, I promise.
