The Pittsburgh Pirates won their third straight game on Tuesday night by defeating the Atlanta Braves by a score of 12-9.

In what proved to be a much more difficult game than it appeared it would be after jumping out to a 9-0 second inning lead, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Atlanta Braves in game two of their four game series on Tuesday night. The Pittsburgh Pirates need some serious pitching help, but at least their lineup is awesome. Anyway, here are the three stars and stiffs from Tuesday night’s game.

STARS

Catcher Francisco Cervelli – On the day where the Pittsburgh Pirates backstop inked a new three year 31 million dollar deal, Francisco Cervelli also collected three hits at the plate. On Tuesday night Francisco Cervelli went 3-for-5  with a double, two RBI, two runs scored, and he stole his second base of the season. After Tuesday night’s performance, Cervelli’s average on the season is now up to .289 and his on base percentage is .393.

Tuesday night’s performance was a great way for Cervelli to celebrate his new long-term contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Both Cervelli and Pirate fans alike are very, very happy about the day he had on Tuesday both on and off the field.

More from Rum Bunter

Left fielder Gregory Polanco – Gregory Polanco had a monster game on Tuesday night as he collected his first career three double game. Polanco went 3-for-5 with three doubles, two runs scored, and he drove in a run.

The budding superstar continued to flash all his tools on Tuesday night as two of his doubles were smoked to right field, while the other was driven the opposite way off of a left-handed pitcher. Polanco also showed off his defensive skills on Tuesday night with a great sliding grab in the third inning.

After Tuesday night’s game, Polanco’s slash line on the season is up to .307/.409/.518/.927 to go along with a 146 wRC+. Furthermore, Polanco now has a National League leading 15 doubles on the season.

Center fielder Andrew McCutchen – Pittsburgh Pirates superstar Andrew McCutchen continued his scorching hot May on Tuesday night. McCutchen entered Tuesday night’s game with a .295/.340/.523/.863 slash line in his last 50 plate appearances, and this included his 0-for-5 performance on Monday night.

In Tuesday’s victory McCutchen went 3-for-5 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored. After his performance on Tuesday night, McCutchen’s OPS is up to .833 on the season. While an OPS of .833 is still low for McCutchen’s standards, it looks like he is coming out of his early season funk.

The most encouraging sign from McCutchen has been how consistently he has been putting good swings on balls lately. This was something we did not see from McCutchen early on in the season, but now we are starting to get to the point where even his outs are being hit hard.

STIFFS

Starting pitcher Juan Nicasio – The Pirates spotted Juan Nicasio a 9-0 lead through two innings, yet Nicasio only managed to last five innings. In his five innings pitched Nicasio allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits and two walks. Nicasio also struck out six batters, and allowed his sixth home run of the season.

The real problem inning for Nicasio came in the third inning when he allowed three runs on four hits, and he did record a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the first and fourth innings. After Tuesday night’s outing Nicasio has a 4.50 ERA on the season, but his 4.18 FIP and 3.90 xFIP both indicate he has pitched better than his ERA.

Ultimately, once Super Two date passes in about three weeks or so I expect Jameson Taillon to be called up from AAA and for Juan Nicasio to join the Pirate bullpen. Juan Nicasio proved with the Dodgers last year that he can be a very good reliever, and this move should help both the Pittsburgh Pirates rotation as well as it’s struggling middle relief.

Relief pitcher Ryan Vogelsong – Ryan Vogelsong entered the game for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the top of the sixth inning, and proceeded to struggle. Vogelsong pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief on Tuesday night and he allowed three runs on five hits, a walk, and he hit a batter.

The Ryan Vogelsong experiment, not surprisingly, has gone disastrously this season. Even though Vogelsong’s ERA is just 4.12 in 19 2/3 innings pitched, his walk rate (4.58 BB/9), FIP (5.33), and xFIP (4.87) are all porous. When Jameson Taillon is called up and Juan Nicasio gets shifted to the bullpen, I expect Vogelsong to be designated for assignment.

Relief pitcher Arquimedes Caminero – After having a strong rookie campaign for the Pirates in 2015, Arquimedes Caminero has been terrible in 2016. Caminero faced one batter tonight, and allowed a two-run home run. Obviously it is never good when you face just one batter and that batter hits a home run.

Caminero has now allowed three home runs in 14 2/3 innings pitched this season which is an average of 1.84 HR/9. The rest of his numbers are not good either. Caminero is averaging 6.75 BB/9, his ERA is 5.52, his FIP is 6.44, and his xFIP is 4.67. In my opinion, when Cory Luebke returned Arquimedes Caminero should have been designated for assignment instead of A.J. Schugel being optioned to AAA. Hopefully a Caminero for Schugel swap happens soon.

Next: The Pirates Are Proving They Can Fix Position Players Too

Well, Tuesday night was certainly a wild game. But in the end, the Pittsburgh Pirates picked up the victory to improve to 21-17 on the season and ultimately that’s all that matters. Time to go win this four game series behind Francisco Liriano on Wednesday.
