Today

marked the final day of workouts at Pirate City.

Scott Olsen threw a side session this morning – throwing 25 pitches (all fastballs).

The pitchers warmed up as a group at 9:45 and then had a light throwing program. Kevin Correia, Ross Ohlendorf, Joel Hanrahan, Joe Beimel and Jose Veras had a side session in the bullpen.

Position players warmed up at 9:45 and long tossed before taking BP off various coaches from 10:10 until 11:00. The players ran the bases as a conditioning drill before watching the Bunt Finals.

Evan Meek had a light workout today, as he is bothered by some tightness in his right calf.

In the 10-day bunting competition, Kevin Correia, Jeff Karstens, Joe Beimel, Chris Resop, Fernando Nieve and Sean Gallagher all advanced to the final round.

The finals were held today after practice and in front of the entire team.

"“You got to have pitchers who can handle the bat.  It was a soft spot identified to me early in the interview process. They’ve heightened the awareness of it throughout the Minor League system already, and they’ll continue to do so. It’s just something you need to know how to do.” —Clint Hurdle"

In spite having just three at-bats since 2006, Joe Beimel defeated Kevin Correia to capture the title of “Best Bucco  Bunter.” I’m curious just how bad the competition must have been.

Paul Maholm tweeted that his team was eight under through eight holes in the Fourth Annual Pirates Charities Golf outing at River Wilderness Golf Course in Bradenton.

Tomorrow camp moves to McKechnie Field, where Equipment Manager Scott Bonnett and his crew will be preparing the clubhouse today and tonight for the teams and Smitty’s arrival in the morning.
