New Pittsburgh Pirates Trainer Has Local Ties

Todd Tomczyk

was hired today by the Pittsburgh Pirates and will be the team’s Head Athletic Trainer.  Tomczyk will replace Brad Henderson who was fired by the team.

Tomczyk is younger and had spent the last five seasons as an assistant trainer for the L.A. Dodgers.  It makes sense for Tomczyk to want to get out of L.A. with all of the drama surrounding that club, and it also must be cool for him to return to his hometown and become the top guy after spending some time paying his dues throughout professional baseball.

We would think that Tomczyk will be the guy who goes after an assistant to serve as a replacement for Mike Sandoval who was also let go by the Bucs recently.

The Pirates press release noted that Tomczyk had been with the Cleveland Indians organization prior to joining L.A.    He spent time with AAA Buffalo (2005-06), AA Akron (2003-04), Class A Columbus (2000-01) and Class A Burlington (1999).

Tomczyk also was the minor league rehabilitation coordinator for two years in 2001 and 2002.

Tomczyk is from Bethel Park.  He graduated in 1994 from Seton-La Salle High School.

He holds a bachelor’s in sports medicine from Duquesne.  He also got his master’s degree at Cal U. in California, PA.
