Joe Maddon will become the next Chicago Cubs manager. Hat tip to Theo Epstein and the Cubs on getting the best available manager on the board. Of course, the bad news is that the Pirates play the Cubs a lot in the National League Central Division.   The Cubs have a ton of talent on the way as was evident during the season.  If you recall, Chicago was playing some great baseball until they ran into the hot Buccos late in the season.

Anyway, Maddon was the first skipper to really embrace all of the saber slanted information that the Tampa Bay Rays are so good at developing.  Now he will take his talent to Wrigleyville.  It isn’t a major deal, in fact, maybe the Cubs will pay Maddon so much money it will impact their on the field payr….ah, never mind.  That isn’t happening.  Maddon will probably get more than $5 million a year, that isn’t much in the grand scheme of things in Chicago.

Of course, the Cubs are denying the deal because of the first Major League Baseball World Series Game Seven in eleven years, but it makes sense and since Heyman reported it, everyone knows it’s just a matter of time.  Rick Renteria spent one year as the skipper and reportedly was told about the team looking to hire Maddon–that had to be an interesting conversation.  But let’s face it, the Cubs have had some big time skippers come in to save the franchise…Lou Pinella anyone?

Maybe the Cubs will still be the Cubs.   Maybe the Curse of the Billy Goat is just too twisted to break, it’s loomed over the franchise since 1945.  Even a butchered goat hung from the Harry Caray statue couldn’t break it.   The Cubs have tried…and failed season after season and hiring the best skipper has failed before for the team.  Maybe they won’t break the bank in free agency as the rumors have swirled.

But maybe not.

And that’s what is scary.
