Outfielder Ben Gamel

The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed Ben Gamel off waivers from the then Cleveland Indians last May. Quickly, Gamel became a regular in the Pirate lineup and a favorite among Pirate fans. That said, he too could be on the traded block when the work stoppage ends.

In 383 PAs with the Pirates last season Gamel hit for a .255/.352/.399 slash line. He walked at a 12.5% clip, struck out at a 25.8% rate and he posted a 105 wRC+. When the dust settled Gamel posted a 1.2 fWAR last season, which was the second best of his six-year MLB career.

Gamel is a left-handed hitter who can play all three outfield positions, as well as first base. The 29-year-old Gamel is a fiery player on the field, a great clubhouse guy, can bat leadoff, and has postseason experience, all of which are traits that will appeal to teams looking to contend during the 2022 season.

Like Newman, Gamel and the Pirates have already agreed to a contract to avoid arbitration. Gamel will make $1.8 million in 2022. This a cheap deal for a player the caliber of Gamel and could contribute to him potentially being traded before the season begins.
