Clint Hurdle spent some time talking to reporters after the Pittsburgh Pirates took the loss against the Minnesota Twins by a score of 8-3 in Grapefruit League action.  The questions ran the gamut from Andrew McCutchen‘s lower body soreness to Pedro Alvarez‘ progression at first base.  Clint was also asked about Jaff Decker, and had some very encouraging words for the roster-hopeful young man.

He was his usual irascible self, fielding questions in his usual style, as seen in this video below:

As we went over in our game recap, Casey Sadler did not have his best outing, going for 2.1 IP and giving up five hits leading to four earned runs, including a home-run from from the Twins’ Kenny Vargas.  Sadler had these comments after the game:

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ spring training is going by in a flash, and some players still have yet to make strong claims to any available roster spots.  With the first round of cuts looming, it will be very interesting to see who Clint Hurdle and staff give extra developmental time.  For players such as Jaff Decker, an extended opportunity could mean more time to grab that elusive final spot on the 25-man roster.
