Pirates Grab Brandon Jones [VIDEOS]

The Pirates continue to make efforts at improving the major league team.   Figures.  Just minutes ago we wrapped up an interview with HotStove.com.  Tom and Paul asked if the Pirates were going to continue to look for bats, maybe Rick Ankiel?  I didn’t believe the Bucs would add any more bats to the roster.  Hang up the phone.  Smile.  The Bucs go and get another talented player with some big league experience.

Brandon Jones is now on the 40-man roster according to Jen Langosch.   Jones was rumored to be in the Jason Bay deal from 2008.  Also please remember that heading into 2008, Jones was ranked ahead of Tommy Hanson.   The kid has a future.  Somewhere.  He needs to find his power stroke first, but the Bucs would have picked second on the claim which means Jones is likely coveted by some other big league teams.    Even if Braves fans think he is Brian Bixler.  Hell, we saw those same comments about Morton too.

So what if he doesn’t work out?  He could be moved not only to AAA, but also around the league.  Catcher depth?   The Yankees aren’t exactly loaded with top talent in the minor leagues?  Kansas City?

How this fits into the Pirates long term picture is unknown.  We could care less.  He is another solid player who hasn’t been given a true opportunity to prove he can stick at the major league level.  Jones numbers show that he hasn’t been exactly blown away by major league pitching.  He hasn’t had Andrew McCutchen type immediate success either.  He is 26 and he is a Pirate.  Keep ’em coming Frank and Neal.

Scott McCauley the voice of the Indianapolis Indians AAA team had this tweet:
