Ten years ago today, Three Rivers Stadium was
blown up. The old girl had given us amazing memories from countless memorable games played within its’ massive concreteness.
But cookie cutters lost their hipness. It was time for her to go. Lots of promises were made. All of us were fired up.
Pittsburgh sports fans would get fields that matched the tremendous history of their franchises. The architects delivered on both in a big way.
Bidders began to line up to construct a football stadium where fans have enjoyed an amazing ten years of success.
Conference titles, Championships, and Super Bowl trophies have been added to the new girl. Hell Heinz Field was even cool for me on a personal level– when we donned lucha masks during the AFC Championship, caught the eye of an NFL Films photographer, and ended up in Sports Illustrated.
But no such glory has come to PNC Park. Unfortunately when the Pirates organization moved into the best ballpark in the country, the owners decided to pull their best Major League (the movie) impersonation and put together a team that should have had our Buccos relocated to another city.
So ten years later, Pittsburgh is left with an amazing ballpark and a ballclub that has been well, disappointing. Thankfully the football team has been anything but.
Heh, it’s still an awesome video.
