Pedro Alvarez Injury Causes Clint Hurdle to Rank Backup Third Baseman

The Pittsburgh Pirates

announced that Pedro Alvarez won’t be playing this weekend. The Bucs third baseman was injured in the 8-6 loss to the Rays on Thursday. He had discomfort which lead to inflammation in his left knee.

The Pirates report that Alvarez is currently day-to-day.  He will be out of action this weekend.

It sucks for Alvarez to suffer a setback when it was time to start putting everything together.  Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle said, ” he either hit a bag or stepped behind a bag. That’s what I was told. Something like that.”

Of course with Alvarez out of the picture, it gives Pirates fans a glimpse into what Hurdle is thinking about the position.  It appears that Casey McGehee will remain in the platoon at first base for the weekend.  “We got a bunch of options for guys at third base,” Hurdle said.

Hurdle went so far as to rank the players that will pick up the slack for the missing Alvarez which was interesting.  He went with Josh Harrison.  Yamaico Navarro, and then Matt Hague.  He did specifify to get the “innings.”  We could also assume he meant—this weekend as well.
