Pirates Take John Kuchno, OSU Buckeye: Video & Scouting Report

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected John Kuchno of THE Ohio State University in the 18th round.

Kuchno is 6′ 5″ and 210 pounds.   The right hander has reached 95 MPH.   His curveball looks solid in the video below.

In 74 innings this season he gave up 89 hits, walked 30 and struck out 59.

2011 (Freshman): Appeared in 10 games, making seven starts … went 1-4 with a 6.68 ERA in 31.0 innings pitched … struck out one in a scoreless inning against Northwestern (4/2) … struck out five over 3.0 innings in start against Miami (4/6) … allowed one earned over 4.0 innings against Akron to pick up first career win (4/13) … gave up one earned while striking out three in 5.0 innings against Oklahoma State (5/11) … named Academic All-Big Ten and an OSU Scholar-Athlete.

St. Paul’s/Wake Forest: John attended Wake Forest as a freshman in 2009-10 … after he grew four inches during his year at Wake Forest, he was pitching well in a showcase event in Indianapolis that was attended by Ohio State assistant coach Mike Stafford … he visited Ohio State on his way home from Indiana and accepted Ohio State’s invite to join the team … played only one year of high school baseball at St. Paul’s … also lettered two years in basketball … is majoring in political science and journalism.

Scouts feel he has two plus pitches.
