The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed fifth round pick Adrian Sampson according to the representation firm SosnickCobbe.    Sampson is headed to State College to begin his pro career with the State College Spikes.

Sampson had a commitment to wear those awful Oregon Ducks uniforms.  He is a Tommy John surgery survivor from 2009 and his career has taken off since entering Bellevue Community College.

He was drafted by the Marlins in 2009, but didn’t sign.  The right hander was undefeated for Bellevue this season.  Here is a solid scouting report from MLB Dirt from this season. Sampson’s fastball was sitting 90-91 mph, hitting the high 80’s a few times but also touching 92 and 93 mph a few times the article states.

Most feel Sampson’s curveball is his best pitch. It has definently helped him put up some serious numbers as Sampson put up a 1.36 ERA in 79.1 innings and 107 strikeouts with just 27 walks. In 2011, he was solid as well in 62.2 innings he punched out 82 bad guys and gave up just 15 walks.
