Reports: Phil Irwin Headed To Pittsburgh Will Get First Pirates Start
By Tom Smith
The Pittsburgh Pirates still haven’t announced who will start on Raise The Jolly Roger Flag Day this Sunday at PNC Park. It would seem senseless to give Wandy Rodriguez the start with a gimpy hamstring, so it’s presumed that Phil Irwin is the insurance in case Rodriguez can’t go.
Kristy Robinson tweeted that Irwin will get the start.
"Kristy Robinson@Kristy_RobinsonRight-hander Phil Irwin will start for Wandy Rodriguez (left hamstring) on Sunday according to source #Pirates"
The report was backed up in a cool manner by Irwin’s brother too….
"T.J. Irwin@tirwinjr9h@Kristy_Robinson my sources agree with yours. Lol. I’m Pittsburgh bound to see my little brother. @FilthyPhil36"
Other reports have stated Irwin is the Wandy insurance policy. It’s hard to imagine a reason for Rodriguez to be allowed to head to the mound, so watching Irwin will be a pretty good time. The Reds struggled mightily with the hook of A.J. Burnett last night. Let’s trust Irwin has the same good fortune.
In case you’ve missed it, Irwin has a wicked curveball that has been a ton of fun to watch.
