Clay Holmes Latest Pirates Pitcher Headed to Dr. Andrews Office

)

A visit to Dr. James Andrews has to be the most comforting and disheartening thing a young player can experience.  On one hand, the player is headed to the expert of all experts.  But the news might not be what the player wants to hear.

The news for Kyle McPherson wasn’t what he wanted to hear and lead to surgery.  McPherson was impressive in his first year in the big leagues highlighted by shutting down the hated Reds in his final start.  But 2013 was a different story as surgery was required.

Now the Pirates have another pitcher headed to see Dr. James Andrews.  Pirates Prospects reports that Clay Holmes is headed to see the doctor.

The big-right hander is feeling some tightness in his powerful elbow and has an appointment next week with Dr. Andrews.  Much like McPherson, Holmes had elbow challenges and was told to rest and work hard to rehab over the winter.

It sounds like it didn’t work, but at least Holmes will hear from the expert.  But it still sucks for such a talented pitcher who showed serious improvement in the final few starts of 2013.

The results of the visit will probably come out next Thursday.  Fingers crossed.
