Francisco Liriano is hotter than any pitcher in the National League.  Coming into the game tonight against the Boston Red Sox, Francisco Liriano is looking better than the Liriano of 2013 which is hard to imagine.  The southpaw has fired 16 consecutive scoreless innings which according to the Pirates game notes, is the longest active streak in the National League.  The streak extends to his start on August 31.

The lefty has been hot before the streak as well.   Liriano has an 0.67 ERA in his last 27 innings pitched as he has given up just two earned runs.  In his last eleven starts, he has given up two runs or less in ten of them.

Looking deeeper at Liriano–last season he pitched 161 innings and stuckout 163 while giving up 134 hits.  In 2014, Liriano has pitched 145.1 innings and struckout 161 while giving up just 119 hits.  Pretty amazing, right?

When we wrote that Francisco Liriano was finishing the season strong, we were worried that it might be the perfect time for Liriano to regress a litttle bit.

Hardly.

Matchup notes:  In some numbers that don’t really matter, Frank the Tank has struggled against the Red Sox with a 7.01 ERA giving up 20 earned runs in 25.2 innings.  The last time Liriano pitched against the Sox was when he was with the Minnesota Twins back in 2011.
