Pittsburgh Pirates Minor League Report? What is this? Well, let me explain!

Last Month, we gave you a brief look at each team in the Pirates Minor League system. We at Rum Bunter strive to be your one stop site for all things Pirates. Starting today, we are looking forward to making the Pittsburgh Pirates Minor League Report a new weekly segment. During these weekly reports, you will get a look at how each Pirates’ affiliate did during the previous week along with division standings. We will also give you updates about players who have stood out during the previous week, check in on the injury report, and give you a look at the week ahead.

We will start our weekly recap with the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians.

 Triple-A Indianapolis Indians

The Indianapolis Indians went 5-2 over the last week. This included a three-game sweep of the Buffalo Bisons in Buffalo. They followed up the sweep by returning home and earning a split in a four-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens.

International League Western Division standings:

Indianapolis Indians – 30-21

Columbus Clippers – 26-24

Louisville Bats – 25-25

Toledo Mud Hens – 21-29

Players that stood out:

Keon Broxton was called up from Double-A and it didn’t take long for him to impress during his AAA debut. In his first plate appearance, he homered.

Alen Hanson continues to swing a hot bat. He had 13 hits, including one home run and seven RBIs and scored six times. He is hitting .311 this season. Alen was named the International League Player of the Month for May!

Brent Morel had 12 hits and seven RBIs last week while raising his average to .218 for the season. This included a four-hit game against Buffalo.

Gorkys Hernandez had a grand slam against Buffalo. He is now batting .277 for the year.

More from Pirates Prospects

Tony Sanchez collected seven hits and eight RBIs while raising his average to .250.

Jaff Decker has returned to the lineup after some time on the Disabled List. He is currently batting .309 for the season.

Casey Sadler and Adrian Sampson both picked up their fourth wins, joining Charlie Leesman for the team lead.

Blake Wood picked up his team-leading 12th and 13th saves.

Injury report:

As reported by fellow Rum Bunter staffer Jason Rollison earlier this week, Nick Kingham has undergone Tommy John surgery and will likely miss the remainder of this season and part of next season.

John Holdzkom remains on the Disabled List with right shoulder fatigue.

Also on Wednesday, the Pirates’ Organization allowed third baseman Deibinson Romero to be released from his contract. Prior to his release, Deibinson had been hitting .302/.403/.548 and had an impressive .950 OPS while at Indianapolis. He also led the team with six home runs.

Interesting Matchup:

Many fans were excited to see the Detroit Tigers’ starting pitcher Justin Verlander make a rehab start on Sunday at Victory Field in Indianapolis.

A look at next week:

The Indians begin the week at home with a three-game series with the 25-25 Buffalo Bisons from the International League North Division. Then, the team heads to Allentown, PA for a four-game weekend series against the 20-32 Lehigh Valley IronPigs, also from the North Division.

Next, we step down to Double-A Altoona.

Double-A Altoona Curve

The Altoona Curve went 4-3 over the last week. This included a win at the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Then, they went 1-2 during a visit with the New Britain Rock Cats. Next, the Curve returned home and took two of three from the Binghamton Mets.

Eastern League Western Division standings:

Altoona Curve – 28-20

Bowie Baysox – 26-24

Akron RubberDucks – 23-26

Richmond Flying Squirrels – 22-25

Harrisburg Senators – 21-28

Erie SeaWolves – 17-30

Players that stood out:

Jose Osuna was called up from Bradenton on Friday and saw action in two games. He went three for seven with two doubles, a single, and a walk while scoring two runs.

Josh Bell raised his average slightly over the past week to .343 while scattering nine hits and four RBIs and scoring four times.

Max Moroff had ten hits and raised his average to .328.

Stetson Allie had one home run to add to his team-leading seven homers. He is now hitting .214.

Jason Creasy picked up his fifth and team-leading sixth win of the season.

Angel Sanchez collected his fifth win. He leads the team in strike outs with 36.

Injury report:

Tyler Glasnow remains on the Disabled List with a sprained right ankle.

A look at next week:

The Curve are enjoying an off day Monday before they play host to the Eastern League East Division leader New Britain Rock Cats. The Rock Cats currently have a 31-18 record. Then, the Curve will head north for a four-game weekend series with the Erie SeaWolves.

We now heat up as we head south for a look at the Advanced A Bradenton Marauders.

Advanced A Bradenton Marauders

The Bradenton Marauders went 1-5 over the course of last week. They went 1-3 against the Daytona Tortugas. Then, the Marauders dropped two to the Jupiter Hammerheads.

Florida State League South Division standings:

Charlotte Stone Crabs – 33-17

St. Lucie Mets – 25-25

Fort Myers Miracle – 24-26

Jupiter Hammerheads – 24-26

Palm Beach Cardinals – 24-26

Bradenton Marauders – 23-27

Players that stood out:

Cody Dickson picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season.

Brett McKinney notched his team-leading eighth save of the season.

A look at next week:

The Marauders finish up the weekend series with the Jupiter Hammerheads yesterday. Then, St. Lucie visits for two games. After that they play three games against the Fort Myers Miracle, Friday at home while Thursday and Saturday are on the road  They finish the week with an off day Sunday.

We dig deep and head for the hills as we take a look at the Class-A West Virginia Power.

Class-A West Virginia Power

The West Virginia Power went 5-2 over the last week and currently have a three-game winning streak. They went 2-1 while visiting the Lakewood BlueClaws. Then, the Power completed a three-game sweep on the road at the Delmarva Shorebirds.

South Atlantic League Northern Division standings:

Hickory Crawdads – 34-16

West Virginia Power – 30-20

Hagerstown Suns – 25-25

Lakewood BlueClaws – 24-25

Kannapolis Intimidators – 24-26

Delmarva Shorebirds – 23-27

Greensboro Grasshoppers – 21-29

Players that stood out:

Michael Suchy had seven hits, including a home run and five RBIs, scored six times, walked six times, and had zero strikeouts this week.

Jerrick Suiter is now batting .325. He scattered ten hits, including a home run, and collected seven RBIs this week.

Elvis Escobar saw his average climb to .285 this week while collecting 12 hits and six RBIs and scored six runs.

Connor Joe had three hits Sunday and raised his average to .200.

Austin Coley leads the team with six wins and 48 strikeouts.

Stephen Tarpley, as you may remember from the Travis Snider trade, picked up two wins this week. In ten innings of work, he had nine Ks while allowing 12 hits. After just two starts, his ERA sits at 0.90.

A look at next week:

The Power return home to host the Greensboro Grasshoppers for a three-game series to start the week before going on the road to face the Rome Braves for four games.

Next, we look at the newest member of the farm system in the Short Season A West Virginia Black Bears.
