Pittsburgh Pirates Transactions: July 10-16

Rum Bunter’s weekly review of transactions throughout the Pittsburgh Pirates organization from the previous week.

Throughout the course of a Major League Baseball season there are plenty of roster transactions that take place. Some are noticeable ones involving Major League players. While others are less noticeable and feature players being moved around the Minor League levels.

All of this can be difficult to keep track of, so each week here at Rum Bunter we provide a weekly recap of transactions from within the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. This weeks involves much of the usual movement, but also features a trio of players beginning rehab assignments. Furthermore, it also features the signing of a 2016 draft pick.

July 10 – The Pittsburgh Pirates sent Right Handed Pitcher Ryan Vogelsong to Altoona (AA) for a rehab assignment. Vogelsong had previously been placed on the disabled list for injuries suffered from being hit in the face with a pitch against the Colorado Rockies on May 23rd.

July 12 – The Milwaukee Brewers claimed right-handed relief pitcher Rob Scahill off of waivers. Scahill had previously been designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 3rd.

July 14 – Right-handed relief pitcher John Kuchno was assigned to Altoona (AA) from Indianapolis (AAA).

July 14 – The Pittsburgh Pirates sent catcher Francisco Cervelli to Indianapolis (AAA) for a rehab assignment. Cervelli had previously been placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 11th with a hand injury.

July 14 – The Pittsburgh Pirates signed free agent catcher Brett Synek to a minor league contract. Synek was assigned to GCL Pirates (Rookie).

July 15 – The Pittsburgh Pirates signed 2016 draft pick right-handed pitcher Austin Shields. Shields was assigned to GCL Pirates (Rookie).

July 16 – The Pittsburgh Pirates activated right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole. Cole had previously been placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 14th for a right triceps strain.

July 16 – The Pittsburgh Pirates sent catcher Elias Diaz to Altoona (AA) for a rehab assignment. Diaz had previously been placed on the 60-day disabled list on April 3rd.

July 16 – The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned first baseman Josh Bell to Indianapolis (AAA).
