The Pittsburgh Pirates are now 1-1 on the season following a 5-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday

The Pittsburgh Pirates picked up their first win of the season against Cincinnati on Sunday. It was all Pirates in their 5-0 victory. After a rain out Saturday, Trevor Williams looked to put in a solid outing in his first start. It was indeed a great outing on the mound as well as with a bat in his hands.

Williams went 6 innings of shut out baseball allowing only 3 hits, a walk, and 6 strike outs. He could’ve went deeper into the ballgame, but after a lengthier 6th inning pitch count wise, it was in their best interest to sit him down for the rest of the ballgame. Williams also went 1 for 2 at the plate along with 2 RBI’s and a bases loaded walk that chased Cincinnati starter Sonny Gray from the game.

On the flip side, Gray had a less than ideal outing for the Reds on Sunday. He struggled with command all afternoon by lasting only 2.2 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs total in his Reds debut. Gray also gave up 4 walks, threw only 35 of 72 pitches for a strike, and failed to record a strikeout.

Other than Williams production at the plate, Adam Frazier and Melky Cabrera picked up a pair of hits. Starling Marte, Josh Bell, and Corey Dickerson each provided an RBI in the Pirates 5-0 win. Everyone up and down the lineup showed great patience at the plate all game long.

Other notes from todays game:

  • Joe Musgrove, who was originally scheduled to start today, got 2 innings of work in relief. He will start Friday against Cincinnati at PNC Park.
  • Felipe Vazquez worked the ninth, but wasn’t able to get the last out after allowing a double and a walk. Keone Kela was able to strike out Matt Kemp for the final out.
