The Pittsburgh Pirates lose another one to the Chicago Cubs by the score of 14-1. It was a less than stellar performance for James Marvel as he struggled to get outs against a stout Cubs offense.

Despite picking up 8 hits along the way for the Pittsburgh Pirates offense, most of them were singles that didn’t supply much in terms of runs. Kevin Newman had another spectacular day at the plate going 3-5 including a double, his season average is up to .318.

Adam Frazier and Jose Osuna were the others that supplied the team with at least an ounce of contribution on offense. Both tallying 2 hits a piece. Unfortunately, Bryan Reynolds was quiet this afternoon as he went 0-4 dropping his average to .321. If he wants to win this batting title, he will need to have a couple big games down the stretch because Anthony Rendon is starting to pull away.

The Cubs had a great day at the plate as they compiled 14 runs on 14 hits in the route of the Pirates. Nico Hoerner and Kris Bryant both had 3 hit days combining for 7 of the 14 RBI’s. Zobrist, Rizzo, and Castellanos all had a multi-hit day as well.

James Marvel was the starter for Pittsburgh in this matchup. Needless to say, it did not go well. He allowed 7 ER on 9 hits while walking none. He only induced 2 strike outs in his 4 innings of effort. His ERA is now up to 9.00 after his 2nd major league start. Marvel looked completely outmatched the entire game as the Cubs crushed his pitches all day long.

They were getting a lot of hard contact. Marvel won’t overpower you with his stuff, so his location needs to be spot on. In today’s case, he wasn’t hitting his spots as effectively as he would have liked. He will get 2 more starts this season and hopefully he will take them and run with them.

The Pirates start a series against the Seattle Mariners this week at PNC Park.
