Manager Derek Shelton and the Pittsburgh Pirates finalized their 2020 coaching staff with a final hire on Tuesday
In a little over a month, Pittsburgh Pirates pitchers and catchers will report to Bradenton for the start of Spring Training. With Spring Training right around the corner, it was important for new manager Derek Shelton to finalize his 2020 coaching staff. On Tuesday, Shelton did just that.
Mike Rabelo was hired as the team’s assistant hitting coach on Tuesday. Rabelo will work with Rick Eckstein and the Pirate hitters in 2020. The 39-year-old Rabelo joins Shelton’s staff after leading the Double-A Erie Sea Wolves to a 77-61 record as the manager of the Detroit Tigers’ Double-A squad in 2019. This is Rabelo’s first Major League coaching position.
With the addition of Rabelo, the Pirate coaching staff is now complete for 2020.

On paper, this appears to be a much stronger coaching staff than the previous few seasons. The only hold overs from Clint Hurdle‘s staff are Eckstein, third base coach/infield instructor Joey Cora, bullpen catcher Jordan Comadena, and coaching assistant Herbie Andrade. Eckstein is quickly becoming one of the best hitting coaches in the National League, Cora interviewed for multiple managerial jobs this offseason, and Comadena and Andrade both have a great track record when it comes to coaching catchers defensively.
Former Indianapolis Indians pitching coach Justin Meccage was also retained by Shelton. Meccage will now serve as the Pirates’ bullpen coach.
The newcomers are pitching coach Oscar Marin, bench coach Don Kelly, first base coach/outfield instructor Tarrik Brock, coach Glenn Sherlock, and Rabelo. Kelly will be a MLB manager sooner than later, Brock is widely respected throughout baseball for his work as an outfield coach and Sherlock is viewed as one of the best catching instructors in baseball.
