Pittsburgh Pirates: What Divisional Alignment Would Fans Like to See in 2020?

If there is a 2020 MLB season it will be unlike any that baseball fans have seen before, and it could lead to the Pittsburgh Pirates playing some different opponents than we are used to seeing

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there was a time when the odds of there being a 2020 MLB season looked bleak. With no light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel, it appeared we may not get to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates play baseball again until 2021.

However, things now appear to be trending in the other direction. Which each passing day there appears to be growing confidence that there will be a 2020 MLB season in some capacity.

MLB has discussed a few different ideas for a potential modified 2020 season. The latest of which would feature three 10 team divisions, according to Bob Nightengale of the USA Today. In this set up, each team would play 100 games and would only play against the teams in their division.

In this proposal, the Pittsburgh Pirates division would look much different. Instead of playing in the National League Central division against the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, and St. Louis Cardinals, the Pirates would be in a new division.

This division would simply be the ‘East’ division. The Pittsburgh Pirates would be one of 10 teams in this division, and it’s a division that would be a tough one. Joining the Pirates in this division would be the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Miami Marlins, New York Yankees and Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays, and Washington Nationals.

While this division would not be easy, the Pittsburgh Pirates would not be the worst team in the division either. Both the Orioles and Marlins are lesser teams than the Pirates. So, playing in this division could prevent the Pirates from being a last place team in 2020.

Personally, playing different teams in 2020 would be cool. Especially teams like the Phillies and Orioles that the Pirates have a long history with.

So, as a fan, what would you rather see? Would you rather see the Pittsburgh Pirates in this proposed ‘East’ division playing new opponents? Or would you prefer the traditional NL Central division? If you could build any division for the Pirates to be in, what would it be?
