The Pirate Offense

The good news is that the Pittsburgh Pirates were better offensively against the Minnesota Twins than they were in their previous series against e Chicago Cubs. The bad news is that the offense was still not good enough.

This series loss ended on a high offensive note for the Pirates, but the first three games were rough. Monday night the offense went into shutdown mode after plenty of early action, then they got their teeth kicked in on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday afternoon’s finale saw the offense wake back up after nearly being shutout on Wednesday night. The Bucs rallied wit ha run in the 8th inning and two more in the 9th to win the game 6-5. This included Gregory Polanco, who all of a sudden leads MLB in exit velocity, hitting his first home run of the season.

The Verdict

Monday night the offense started strong, then it all but vanished until Thursday’s game. While the offense is still struggling, there are signs of it getting turned around. Kevin Newman, Bryan Reynolds and Josh Bell are all beginning to look much better at the plate. As was mentioned above, Polanco leads MLB in exit velocity. Maybe, just maybe, the offense is finally starting to get it figured out.
