Tragic news headlines this week in Pirates baseball, as the Pittsburgh Pirates take three from the Cubs in their final home series of the season.

The 2020 has had it’s ups and downs, although the headlines breaking early Tuesday morning may represent rock bottom for the Pittsburgh Pirates this season. Coveted middle infield prospect Oneil Cruz has been charged in the Dominican Republic with vehicular manslaughter as well as violation of Covid-19 restrictions.

Cruz now faces up to five years in prison, and depending on the ruling may never see the Major Leagues.

Tanking has been the memo all season long. Entering Wednesday the Pittsburgh Pirates needed to lose just one game to virtually lock up the first overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. Not only did they not lose, but a three out of four series victory over the first place Cubs, now sits the Pirates just one game back of the 29th place Rangers.

What needs to happen for the Pirates to secure the pick? Well losing for one, but help from around the league as well, now that the Buccos take a three game winning streak into Cleveland to close out the season.

The crew talks starters like Steven Brault and JT Brubaker, and breaks down their stellar starts over the last two weeks. While Brault has been the surprise pitcher of the year, earning himself a defined role in the rotation, Trevor Williams has regressed.
