Deciding a direction for the outfield 2021

Entering the 2021 season it is a guarantee that Bryan Reynolds will be somewhere in the outfield for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Odds are, Reynolds will be in left field. However, center field remains a possibiltiy as well.

Other than Reynolds, though, the outfield is a major question mark.

What will the Pittsburgh Pirates do in center field. Will they give Anthony Alford or Jared Oliva a look in center field to start 2021? Perhaps split reps between the two? Maybe Cherington will look to add an outfielder from outside the organization. This could be via trade or free agency.

Then there is right field. Gregory Polanco is still under team control through 2023, but had a woeful 2020 season. That said, Polanco’s exit velocity and hard hit rate was among the best in baseball in 2020. Due to this, he is a big time bounce back candidate. Phillip Evans is slated to return from injury and could factor into the right field equation as well.

If the Pittsburgh Pirates are going to add outfield help from outside the organization, that could be one of Cherington’s goals for the Winter Meetings. Some of that could also hinge on what other moves the team does or does not make at the meetings.
