The disaster that was 2020 has finally come to an end. Happy New Year, Pittsburgh Pirates fans! Onto bigger and better things in 2021.

There is no denying that 2020 was a dumpster fire of a season for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Well, it was not a total dumpster fire. While the Pittsburgh Pirates finished with a MLB worst 19-41 record, this did earn them the number one overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. This pick will allow them to continue to add talent to an already very talented farm system.

MLB Pipeline rated the Pirate farm system as one of the five most improved during 2020. This will only continue with the 2021 draft, with the big fish for the Pittsburgh Pirates being the assumed number one overall pick right-handed pitcher Kumar Rocker.

Away from the baseball diamond 2020 has been a terrible year. All of us here at Rum Bunter sincerely hope everyone and their families have remained safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. For everyone out there who has been impacted by the pandemic, our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to you.

Looking ahead to 2021, there will be reasons for excitement for fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now, sure, the team will almost assuredly finish under .500 for the third consecutive season, but the new core is starting to form.

Ke’Bryan Hayes will enter his first full MLB season with a chance already cement himself as one of the best third baseman in baseball. Bryan Reynolds is primed to bounce back and it will be a big season for Mitch Keller.

Cody Bolton will be the first of the organization’s top pitching prospects to reach the Major Leagues. Jameson Taillon will be back from Tommy John looking to prove he can still be a top of the rotation starting pitcher. We could also see top prospect Oneil Cruz at some point in 2021.

It will be tough for 2021 to be worse than 2020 was for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Let’s all raise a toast to hoping 2021 better for everyone and that we start to get our normal lives back as vaccines are distributed and COVID-19 is defeated.
