The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced a series of roster moves today, including a player going on the Injured List and a player being designated for assignment.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are exceeding expectations right now, at least to start the year. While they will end up towards the bottom of the league, it’s encouraging to see a competitive ball club after last year’s results. However, the club has made a fury of roster moves today and there’s some negative news on the injury front.
The first bit of news is that Ke’Bryan Hayes has aggravated his injury. While he appeared close to returning to club, Hayes appeared to be swinging a bat and felt more discomfort. Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic mentioned he will see a wrist specialist back in Pittsburgh. Hopefully there’s no structural damage and the specialist can figure out what is causing the discomfort.
The Pirates have also officially announced other roster additions; with Chad Kuhl being placed on the 10-day Injured List with shoulder discomfort stemming from his last start with Geoff Hartlieb replacing him on the roster. Kuhl has struggled with his command this season, walking more batters (21.1 percent) than he is striking out (18.4 percent). Hartlieb has a history of getting groundballs bat has struggled with command in his career, and appears to be a bullpen depth option with the game on Sunday looking to be a bullpen game.
The Pirates have also added Todd Frazier to the active roster while designating Dustin Fowler for assignment. Frazier had an opt out at some point in May per Ben Cherington, so adding him to the 26-man now prevents Frazier from having to make a decision. With no other outfield options, this move slides Phillip Evans to left and Frazier as the backup in the corners. This could also signal how the club views Hayes injury length. Fowler hit just .171/.239/.195 with the Pirates and along with Anthony Alford, did not provide much from center field. The Pirates will need to clear a spot on their 26-man when Ka’ai Tom passes Covid protocol and can join the club.
