Saturday morning fans learned what the pitching matchup will be when the Pittsburgh Pirates play the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at PNC Park

Prior to the start of this weekend’s three-game series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals the Pirates did not have a starting pitcher listed for Sunday afternoon’s series finale. Meanwhile, the Cardinals had veteran righty Adam Wainwright listed as their scheduled starter.

Well, we now know who will start for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon. Additionally, after Wainwright was placed on the COVID-19 injured list on Friday, the Cardinals have announced their replacement for him.

Righty Wil Crowe will make the start for the Pirates on Sunday afternoon, while the Cardinals now plan to send righty Carlos Martínez to the mound.

This will be Crowe’s second start of the season. His first start came in a victory over the Minnesota Twins last Sunday. In that start Crowe allowed just 1 run on 4 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in 4 innings of work. Overall this season Crowe has posted a 3.86 ERA, 3.50 FIP, walked 4 batters and struck out 5 in 4.2 innings of work between his one start and an appearance out of the bullpen.

With another strong start Crowe could continue to pitch his way into additional starts with the Pirates. If Crowe continues to pitch well when Chad Kuhl returns from the IL then the struggling Mitch Keller could be the odd man out instead of Crowe.

The 29-year-old righty owns a 4.76 ERA and a 3.74 FIP this season.
