The Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets have already swung one trade this season. Could a second follow with their All-Star second baseman?
The Pittsburgh Pirates most valuable trade chip is Adam Frazier, who is the National League’s starting second baseman in the All-Star Game. The New York Mets are in first place but have had injuries throughout their lineup and rotation. It’s known the Mets are looking to upgrade in the infield. Could the two teams be a potential match?
MLB insider Jon Heyman has indicated yes. He tweeted yesterday that the Mets are interested in the Bucco infielder:
The Pirates and Mets front offices have already completed one trade this year, with Joey Lucchesi moving from San Diego to Pittsburgh and then to New York for catcher Endy Rodriguez. Cherington has familiarity with their front office, working with Mets acting General Manager Zack Scott in Boston. As a result, the two clubs should be more inclined to make deals as Cherington and Scott are familiar with each other’s processes and views on the game.
Who could the Pirates target in a return for Frazier? Mark Vientos, a 2017 second rounder, could be a fit. The third base prospect is hitting .276/.340/.576 in Double-A this season and has that pedigree. With Cherington and this front office targeting more further away players, Alex Ramirez a 2019 J2 signing could be a fit. However, with his bonus, he could be less likely to move, though his signing was under a different regime. There’s also infielder Jaylen Palmer and pitcher Junior Santos who would seem to fit what this front office likes.
Given the history of Cherington and Scott, the clubs line up well. Additionally with the Mets pitching injuries, Tyler Anderson could also be a fit. If the two clubs are discussing Adam Frazier, a general framework could be made for Anderson as well. The Mets and Pirates seem like a natural fit for an Adam Frazier trade as the Mets look to deepen their team
